The Seraphim’s Call

In this painting, the young woman portrayed is in the process of a symbolic coming of age. Inside her cocoon she is actually metamorphosing from child to woman. The element of light and the butterflies are the symbolic representation of the freeing of her femininity. This feeling of freedom is a letting go so that she can “spread her wings” and discover herself as she opens to new experiences and thus to love. The warm reds and golds of the butterflies tell us of her passion and the poppy of her current state of dreaminess as she allows her imagination to roam free. She is represented as a seraphim for she is, in a sense, the highest level of celestial being because she stands at the brink of great adventures and in front of her lies a realm of endless possibilities. You, the viewer, stand in the position of her future and you hold that endless realm within you.
